Mineral electrical insulator MICAVER®
Glass-mica compounds hold a privileged position among the wide variety of insulators offered to the electrical industry. They are positioned by their temperature of use between plastics and ceramics but they possess the ability to be moulded and to be
machined like the former but with the hardness and indestructable qualities of the latter. MICAVER® adds a series of physical and chemical properties to these practical advantages which makes it
an entirely exceptional insulator.
The fact that MICAVER® is used in technological sectors that are highly exacting provides a guarantee of its performances and reliability.
MICAVER® is an entirely mineral material that basically
consists of mica and glass – a binding agent that can be vitrified by fusion. These elements are mixed and combined in powder form, and then heated under pressure: the particles of glass
when they melt, cover the flakes of mica to form a compact and hard mass.
The glass and mica composition is chosen depending upon the electrical and mechanical performances required, the expected behaviour of the insulator and the sizes of the parts while respecting the specifications laid down by the users and the manufacturing processes.
MICAVER® is the trademark given to the range of glass-mica compounds developed by Saint-Gobain Quartz SAS which are adapted to the various models presented in this.
Properties
MICAVER® holds a special place among insulating materials between thermoplastics and ceramics and it possesses some remarkable properties. Its qualities cover an impressive range.
• MICAVER® is a hard, compact, virtually indestructible material that is nevertheless easy to machine.
• It provides great mechanical strength under tension and compression and has also great resistance to impact.
• It has unusual dimensional stability which is maintained when temperature is increased (parts made of MICAVER® of size
300 x 150 mm have been made to a flatness of 0.15 mm). This property explains why it is widely used for insulators with inserts.
• MICAVER® is a mineral insulant that does not burn and, because it contains no carbon, it does not carbonise and MICAVER® has an M0 classification cannot be ignited.
• MICAVER® is not hygroscopic. It is impermeable to oils and gasses and cannot rot. It is stable under all climates and does
not age – its properties remain constant over time.
• MICAVER® has high resistivity (volume and surface).
• High frequency losses are very low.
• MICAVER® is an inorganic product and has little tendency to emit gas. It is very suitable for use in a vacuum (it is used in
some laboratories in the form of insulators for vacuum chambers).
• MICAVER® has good resistance to chemicals in general and though it is attacked by certain acids (acetic, hydrochloric and nitric) it has excellent resistance to other acids (sulphuric and phosphoric) and also to ammonia, caustic soda, organic solvants
(alcohols, ethers, hydrocarbons, etc.) or saline solutions.
• MICAVER® is relatively insensitive to radiation and does not lose its mechanical strength when subject to very high doses.
